The Indian Block Print Co.
Founded in 2010, by Maggie Sheehan, following an inspirational trip to India to meet wooden block carvers, Maggie then built The Indian Block Print Co with the clear aims of supporting and honouring the lives and traditional skills of her Indian team and ensuring sustainable materials for her creative products, with a view to inspiring any non-crafter or crafter to give block printing a go!
The UK’s largest range of wood print blocks ensued and is still growing today, featuring everything from corgis to cow parsley and beetroot to border patterns, not forgetting the intricate Paisley and Ethnic designs the traditional roots of Indian block printing designs.
Sold alongside paints for all surfaces in a range of finishes and all of the equipment you need for successful block printing, The Indian Block Print Co, is definitely the place to start your block printing journey.
What is wooden block printing?
Wooden block printing is a form of relief printing, with negative space carved from the wooden block to create a positive space pattern. Rather than dipping the block into the paint, this is applied directly onto the block using a sponge or sponge dabber, to create an even layer of paint.
By using a soft surface underneath, such as the recommended foam printing mat, the wooden block print when pressed sinks slightly into the surface of the fabric, creating a clearer and crisper print, particularly since not all the block surfaces are 100% even, due to each one being individually hand carved.
Wooden block printing can be either uniform in design, like the tile print featured in the Lampshade Printing YouTube tutorial below or can be random, with motifs printed at different angles all over your fabric.
