#memadeshade January Winner

Updated: Oct 11, 2023

After what can only be described as a very loooong January, #memadeshade is back for 2021! Yey! And we've got off to a great start with lots of fabulous shades, in all shapes and sizes to brighten up our #memadeshade Instagram competition and hopefully provide our makers with new inspiration and ideas for using one of our lampshade making kits.

And this month's winner certainly sticks with the theme of 'bright'! This gorgeous fuchsia shade by Lauren of @juniper_and_spice is made from one of her signature fabric, vintage silk sarees. Drawing on her background in design, Lauren started Juniper and Spice just last year, but has already wowing customers with her beautiful choice of fabrics and lampshade making talents. The winning shade was gifted to a true lover of colour @heneddyhouse, who took the image of the shade in her home.

Lauren will receive her #memadeshade prize of a £100 voucher to be spent at Dannells so let's find out more about Lauren and her lampshade making...

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and the creative things that you do?

With a background in design, I have a passion for all things colourful and unique. In July of last year, I started Juniper & Spice just after my son was born. It gave me the creative outlet I had been missing. I make my lampshades from colourful vintage silk saris I source from India.

Are you a newbie lampshade maker or have you made up a Needcraft Lampshade making kit before?

Since I started in July, I have always used the Needcraft kits for all of my lampshades. Each kit contains everything I need and is good quality.

What do you love about the shade you entered for the #memadeshade competition?

This particular silk is very striking; it features a bright pink geometric design.

What’s do you like most about the Needcraft lampshade making kits?

The lampshade kits allow us designers to explore our creativity in different ways. The number of different materials used to create lampshades with the Needcraft kits is wonderful, each shade unique in style and colour.

Any plans to make more lampshades? Yes! I’m always sourcing vintage saris as I like to make my lampshades with the most beautiful designs and silks I can find. In March I start a Gathered Pleated Lampshade course so I’m looking forward to exploring this.

January's most liked shades

It seems that January was no place for ditsy prints as our top four #mostlikedshades all have a 'pack a punch' print! From the super bold and vibrant African waxed fabric from @the_warren_crew_at_52 to the oversized retro floral shade from @maggiemootextiles,

we're loving the mix of styles in this month's #memadeshade competition.

Self confessed magpie of colour and funky prints @bellsandwhistles2 has made this super-sized floral shade (we love that's she's the lampstand too!) and this fun 40cm shade made in Sophie Allport cow fabric shade from @ohsewkate, is actually for herself although she specialises in making lampshades, bins, clocks, noticeboards and much more.

Well done to all the entrants that ended up in our January's #mostliked and give them a friendly follow on Instagram.
