#memadeshade June Winner

Updated: Oct 26, 2020

It's been another bumper month for our Instagram #memadeshade competition and it seems that staying at home has definitely released some inner creativity making our Needcraft lampshade making kits into some proper beauties!

This month the #memadeshade title goes to this fabulous bamboo print cone shade made by Carolyn of @owlandcatinteriors, who wins our monthly prize of a £100 voucher to be spent at Dannells.

With an equally good eye for a shades and lamp bases alike - who wouldn't love her fantastic chalkware boat base in their home - we find out more about her shade making skills and passion...

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

We moved from the heart of Glasgow City Centre and relocated to the semi-rural area of Clachan of Campsie at the foot of the Campsie Fells to build our new home. Whilst living in a caravan on site and the first of a very cold & dismal winter, I decided to begin making, upcycling and sourcing unique pieces for the new house. I love learning new creative skills and just love a workshop/course, so embarked on any I could find!!

I've added stained glass, macrame, digital collage art, so far, plus I love a good rummage round a car boot or vintage fair so our home is filled with handmade, unusual, and original finds.

Are you a newbie lampshade maker?

I spotted a lampshade making course and was instantly hooked!! After making shades for myself, then family and friends I decided to take the plunge and start Owl & Cat in 2012, making my own shades to sell, and eventually I started running Lampshade Making Workshops in and around Glasgow using the Needcraft workshop packs everything was included which was so convenient it was great fun and I met loads of brilliant folk who all went home with their very own creation!

What do you love about the shade you entered?

I love vintage & retro designs & fabrics and when I managed to get hold of the amazing Chalkware Oriental Boat base I knew exactly what shape of shade & fabric would make it look fabulous again! I am slightly obsessed with the vintage cone shape shades at the moment ! It made my day to have the shade win the June #memadeshade

What do you like most about Needcraft kits?

Needcraft's superb range of products offer you such scope, whether you are making a shade for the first time or a seasoned lampshade maker they have everything you will ever need. I recently used the Digital Printing and Lampshade Design Software and was absolutely chuffed with the end products. Plus the folks at Dannells/Needcraft are always on hand to give advice.

Any more plans to make more shades?

YES definitely!! No matter what my latest obsession might be, I always love making shades, constantly looking to create new designs. Lighting can often update and transform a room without breaking the bank. I would urge folk to have a go, at the end of the day there's nothing more satisfying than creating something for your own home and who knows where it might lead"

June's most liked shades

June's 'most liked shades' swing from bold graphic prints to intricate patterns, showing that anything is possible, when choosing your fabric for one of our lampshade making kits.

We're big fans of using wallpaper too, as @candidowl has done below, using our Double Sided Stick It PVC. If you're wanting to try out wallpaper on the outside of a shade for the first time, take a look at our DIY wallpaper shade tutorial here.
